Sound Doctrine and Teaching

The Bible warns us about the time when doctrinal error will be rife in the Church. The Church has suffered through a throng of ministers who have perpetrated doctrinal error and false teaching. The Bible is clear in pointing out that the time will come when such people will not endure sound doctrine, but they will follow their own lusts and shall unite themselves teachers who shall teach them what they want to hear, they shall turn away from the truth and they shall adhere to stories. (2 Timothy 4:2-4) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; (4) And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. This is what the Church should guard against. It is imperative for the Church to be vigilant and watchful when it comes to doctrine and teaching. The discerning of spirits and challenging doctrinal error is the most important function of the church elders and teachers. The mandate of the Church is to defend the doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ against all false teachers and false prophets. (Titus 1:9-11) Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. (10) For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: (11) Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.

Since the beginning of time, the devil has purposed in his heart to discredit, challenge and mock the word of God. Everything God has said to the human race the devil has challenged until this day. We see the devil opposing and polluting the word of God since the beginning. (Genesis 3:1-5) Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? (2) And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: (3) But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. (4) And the serpent said unto the woman, ye shall not surely die: (5) For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. The corruption and the blatant contradiction of the word of God in the Garden of Eden was the beginning of a heretic and false doctrine. The seeds of doctrinal error and heresy were sown by the devil deep into the hearts of men.
